Linocut print depicting iconic California landmark, this block print was carved and hand pulled by artist David C Young. This composition was photographed decades ago while visiting San Juan Capistrano. We made the trip to see the swallows return, but they were not cooperative. My 35mm was loaded with slide film, so I walked the mission and took photos of everything I thought were good compositions for me to one day paint as a watercolor. I never painted this one, but always liked the composition. In 2014, I tackled it as a carving and ran a limited edition of 30 prints. This print hung at The Santa Barbara Printmaking Association members show in 2017 and was given an honorable mention award.

This view is at New Brighton Beach in Capitola, a coastal town just south of Santa Cruz on Monterey Bay. We have a favorite camping spot above the beach and look forward to any time we can get away and spend some time on the coast. These trees tower above the steep cliffs that line the beach.

Else lived next door; she had been there 30 years when we moved in and was there for almost another 30 after that. She had a large double lot, and worked in her garden daily. It was not unusual to come home and find some flowers from Else’s garden on the kitchen table. I very much enjoyed having a cup of coffee with Else, sitting and talking in the afternoon. I do miss her.

Looking northeast from Emigrant Gap is this view of “Old Man Mountain,”  a distinctive landmark seen between Donner Pass and Emigrant Gap in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Somehow I think quite a few pioneers heading west and crossing the Sierras in the 1800’s saw this view after cresting the mountains. It has always struck me as something I would like to carve and print.

Widely acclaimed as North America’s most beautiful desert lake, Pyramid Lake is a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan, the colossal inland sea that once covered most of Nevada. The Paiute Indian tribe hold it in high esteem, and it is steeped in myths and tales. Surrounded in unusual rock formations, the color of the lake when I was there was so unbelievable I wanted to use watercolor to get the color right on.

This is a carving of an afternoon hike we took in the bay area on a beautiful day in the spring. Coming upon a bend in the trail there was a bush that just called out to me.

I was lightly ribbed for being so taken with a bush, and possibly rightly so. We walked right by scores of similar bushes that day, and trees and grasses, but there was something about the bush. I wanted to give that bush some level of immortality, if you will, by recording it as a piece of art. The immortal bush.
